- Malcolm X Birthday Celebration - 5/19/07

Below are some of the photos taken at the third Annual Malcolm X Awards Celebration.  A presentation was given by community activist Bill Calhoun, followed by a special showing of the documentary "The Life and Death of Malcolm X" followed by food and the awards presentations. We are happy the event was well attended and spirited.  Of special relevance is the poster above which was torn down earlier this year from a Davis High School classroom and led eventually to the suspension of an honor student which demonstrates that even now on his 82nd birthday he remains controversial and poignant.

Davis City Proclamation:

Strangely enough this proclamation was passed in 2005, but in 2006 Don Saylor objected and was joined by Ruth Asmundson and Ted Puntillo in voting against such a recognition. Sue Greenwald and Stephen Souza abstained but did not object.  What caused the shift?  It seems that Malcolm X is becoming more controversial in the City of Davis.
